Refreshing your makeup routine and switching up your products with each changing season is crucial to staying comfortable and confident all year long, especially during the hot, sticky summer months. Your skin changes with the weather and some of your cosmetic staples from winter may not be working to your full advantage in the summer heat.

We’re not recommending that you throw out all of your makeup, but a few simple swaps could give your makeup routine a summer makeover. The National Women’s Show features exhibits from hundreds of beauty brands offering a wide range of fantastic product. We’ve selected a range of products that will be featured in our shows and that are perfect for your summer ready look.

1. TINTED MOISTURIZER WITH SPF

Replace heavy, full coverage foundations with a sheer, tinted moisturizer that also includes sunscreen. This will give your complexion a dewy finish while offering a hint of coverage.  A tinted moisturizer provides a more natural finish that is perfect for the summer without caking or coming off when you sweat.

We love the City Tinted Cream by Marcelle because it is oil free and contains a good amount of SPF. The cream is supercharged with antioxidants, green tea, aloe and chamomile acts like a shield to protect your skin. The best part? It’s super affordable!

2. WATER RESISTANT BROW PENCIL

We’re all about keeping things natural with our summer makeup, especially when we’re headed to the beach or a backyard BBQ.  Adding some definition and colour to your eyebrows could be all you need for a polished, natural look. Whether you stop at the eyebrows or not, you need to make sure that they stay put!

Choose a waterproof eyebrow pencil, like this one from Aloette, for worry-free arches that last through swimming and sweating.

3. NATURAL BRONZER

With added protection from SPF on your face, it’s natural for your skin to appear slightly fairer than the rest of your body in the summer. Avoid this by applying a matte bronzer to the points of your face where the sun would hit: the tops of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, the forehead and around your hairline, then blend with a fluffy brush. For our darker skinned ladies, we recommend using your bronzer as a setting powder to eliminate excess oil.

Our favourite is this Matte Bronzer from Beautycounter. The bronzer comes in two shades and can be easily used for an all over bronze or applied to specific areas for contouring. This product is great for year round use.

4. GLOWING HIGHLIGHTER

Nothing says “summer” like dewy, glowing skin. Warm blushes and heavy contours are great in the fall and winter months, but we prefer to keep the skin looking bare and fresh this season. Highlighters are a great addition to your routine because they enhance your skin and create a natural glow.  Choose a creamy formula and use your fingers to tap it onto your cheekbones, cupids bow, underneath the brow and in the corners of your eyes. The Platinum Sheer Glow from Jordane has a hint of peach for a blushing glow. Bonus: you can also use it on your body for an all over glow!

5. WARM EYESHADOWS

Since we are embracing the “less is more” idea with our skin during the summer months, it’s sometimes nice to add a bit of colour on the eyes.  Warm brown, burgundy, pink and taupe are great choices for any eye colour.  For a subtle day look, use your finger to dab a shimmery taupe shade across the entire eyelid and blend out. To enhance this look for night, use a wet angled brush to trace your upper lash line with a dark brown or burgundy shade eyeshadow. Use a small dry brush to blend out the colour for a soft, smoky finish.

You can create these simple makeup looks using the Blessed in Burgundy Eye Palette from Saint Cosmetics. The palette even comes with a double ended brush that is perfect for lining and blending!

6. WATERPROOF MASCARA

This one goes back to all the swimming and sweating that comes along with summer, and also all the crying you might do when the season comes to an end!

No one likes running mascara, but waterproof formulas can often be difficult to remove and result in lash loss. Choose a makeup remover that is oil based to break down the formula. Just apply to a cotton swab and press into the eye for 1 minute to give the mascara some time to dissolve. When you are ready, gently wipe away.

We love Marcelle’s Ultimate Volume Waterproof Mascara. This one grips on extremely well and the thick brush helps create the fullest lashes without looking spidery or clumpy.

7. SOFT LIP STAIN

For our lips we like to choose a soft shade that is almost nude, but with a bit of colour. Soft coral pinks are universally flattering for any skin tone. When selecting a formula it’s best to avoid thick, drying lipsticks. Gloss looks great but can be inconvenient when you’re strolling around on windy day or have the windows down in the car.  Try and find a sheer cream formula or a lip stain to keep things light on the lips.

Our pick is from Stone Line Cosmetics with their Love Story Lip Stain. This stain boasts a “clump free” finish and is loaded with vitamin E to keep your pucker hydrated all day!
